Description

El Oued is a city located in the north-central part of Algeria, in the Saharan Atlas Mountains. It is known as the "city of a thousand domes" because of the numerous domed buildings that make up its skyline.

The city lies at an altitude of about 170 meters above sea level and covers an area of approximately 1,260 square kilometers. The climate is hot and arid, with temperatures reaching up to 50°C in summer and dropping to around 10°C in winter. Despite the harsh living conditions, El Oued is considered an important agricultural hub, with extensive cultivation of date palms, cereals, and vegetables.

One of the unique features of El Oued is its traditional underground irrigation system, known as khettara. This ancient system enables the farmers to irrigate their crops without any dependence on modern technology. A series of tunnels, believed to have been built as early as the 7th century, transport water from underground wells to the surface, ensuring a sustainable water supply for agriculture.

El Oued is home to a diverse population, consisting of Arabs, Berbers, and Tuaregs. It is also a hub for cultural events, with a yearly date festival showcasing the different varieties of dates grown in the region. The city is also home to several museums, including the Ahmed Zabana National Museum, which houses exhibits on the history and culture of Algeria.

The city's architecture is a fusion of traditional and modern styles. The domed buildings, known as Ksour, are built with mud and have a unique shape that provides natural ventilation and insulation against the hot climate. The modern areas of the city feature modern design, with well-designed buildings and public spaces.

El Oued is a city steeped in history, with a rich cultural and architectural heritage. Whether you're interested in exploring the khettara irrigation system, attending the date festival, or simply admiring the unique dome-shaped buildings, there's something for everyone in this vibrant city.
