The city lies at an altitude of about 170 meters above sea level and covers an area of approximately 1,260 square kilometers. The climate is hot and arid, with temperatures reaching up to 50°C in summer and dropping to around 10°C in winter. Despite the harsh living conditions, El Oued is considered an important agricultural hub, with extensive cultivation of date palms, cereals, and vegetables.
One of the unique features of El Oued is its traditional underground irrigation system, known as khettara.
